I always have loved birds. I was just wondering, how do you teach a bird to talk? Do they just pick words up or do you have to teach them? What treats do you give them as encouragement?

You know, I have always wondered the same thing. I considered getting a bird, but being that I already have a cat, this might not be such a good idea.

Are you talking about a parrot? I don't know of any other types of birds that talk. I think with parrots you repeat phrases until the bird picks it up.

Correct about repetition being the thing to teach birds to "talk". Macaws, Cockatiels and Cocatoos can also be taught phrases and sounds.
In a residential neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky about ten years ago, I used to listen to a mockingbird that replicated the sound of machinery backing up (i.e. "beep ... beep ... beep ....) and a cockatoo in Georgetown, Kentucky which would whistle the "Andy Griffith Show" theme constantly.
All of them were taught by hearing the sound repeatedly and having the inclination and ability to repeat them back.
