Why own a bird? 2007/05/21 00:59
I've never owned a bird nor do I know of someone that does so I don't get why people keep them as pets. I would want my bird to fly free, but if I have to keep it in a cage or worry that it'll get away it might not be worth it to me to have one.

Why do you bird owners own a bird?

While I have personally never kept a bird, I have friends who do. Why keep them?

Well, COMPANIONSHIP for one. MeMate's friend since gradeschool had a peach-faced lovebird for many years. Since she is a single professional type, having someone to get excited to see her and sing to her when she came home often brightened up an otherwise gloomy day. "Tweety" would often perch on her shoulder for hours watching her work on the computer.

She decorated her home with easy-to-clean furnishings so the occasional "accident" was easily gotten rid of as "Tweety" was allowed to roam freely through the house most of the time. The sound of bird song and wings was a very pleasant and comforting sound when we would visit.

Besides, birds are not known for running loose in the neighborhood digging up the flowerbeds or shredding the furniture or leaving big piles of poop on the lawn.

I own a green cheeked conure and she loves her home and her cage she knows its not a prison, she is taken for walks when the whether is good and she enjoys that. birds especially parrots love the companionship of humans and being apart of a home. if a bird is taking care of then they wont try to fly away, my bird has never tried to fly away in fact she nuzzles up to my neck when were walking. So i would say i can understand how you feel, if the bird is never taken out and its always in its cage that is not good, but my bird is only in their for a short time. Their great companions and very smart!!!
