Beta's (also known as Siamese Fighting fish) are about my favorite to keep around. They are much easier than other exotics to maintain.
Being "puddle fish" in the wild (That is they come from areas where the rainy season lasts a good while and standing water puddles can last all year)you don't need a big tank. In fact a decorative vertical container can be used as part of a table centerpiece or incorporated into a flower arrangement on a mantle. They are one of the few fish that can "breathe" air directly when oxygen levels get low in their supply so you don't need a bubbler.
They get along well enough with about any other fish except their own kind so an algae eater can help keep the tank clean if you want more than snails for the job.(But then you need the bubbler back)
Also, they are colorful and the large fins of the males are very decorative. So, what kind of Beta experiences have you had?
